Chicago Bulls 104, Miami Heat 96

The Heat had a 12 point lead late in the third quarter, but they blew it and lost the game.  The Bulls outscored the Heat 32-20 in the 4th quarter on their way to victory.  The Heat were outrebounded 44-33 by the Bulls but the big reason the Heat lost was because of poor free throw shooting.  The Heat only shot 16 for 35 (47.1%) from the free throw line and that doomed them last night.  Dwyane Wade led the way for the Heat with 28 points, 9 rebounds, 5 assists and 3 steals.  But, D-Wade didn’t shoot well from the floor (12 of 27) or the free throw line (4 of 10) and that hurt the Heat.  Shaq also had a solid game with 23 points, 13 rebounds and 2 blocked shots last night.  But, Shaq was only 3 for 12 from the free throw line and that hurt the Heat’s cause.  Antoine Walker had a decent game off of the bench with 12 points, 3 rebounds and 2 steals.  James Posey wound up fouling out but he played 36 active minutes.  Posey finished with 10 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals and 2 blocked shots.  Udonis Haslem had a night to forget.  He played in only 24 minutes due to foul trouble and he finished the game with only 5 points and 1 rebound.  The Heat are now down 3-0 to the Bulls in this series.

Chicago Bulls 107, Miami Heat 89

Blogged under Bloglockers,Game Recaps,Injuries,The NBA Playoffs by alleyoop on Tuesday 24 April 2007 at 11:30 pm

The Miami Heat had big problems tonight with the athletic ability of the Chicago Bulls.  The Heat prefer to play a slow placed game but the Bulls would have none of that today.  The Bulls shot an amazing 55.1% from the floor in this game as the Heat didn’t play any defense at all.  Luol Deng and Ben Gordon scored 53 points between them against the Heat tonight.  Dwyane Wade led the way for the Heat with 21 points, 3 rebounds and 7 assists.  Shaq wound up scoring 17 points and grabbed 8 rebounds.  Both Shaq and D-Wade each turned the ball over 7 times and that didn’t help the Heat’s cause.  James Posey had a good game off of the bench with 11 points, 8 rebounds, 2 assists and 5 steals.  Jason Kapono and Antoine Walker each pitched in with 11 points off the bench.  The Heat now trail the Bulls 2-0 in this series.

Chicago Bulls 96, Miami Heat 91

The Miami Heat stayed close with Bulls despite Shaq fouling out after 27 minutes and the Bulls outrebounding them 46-33 yesterday.  Dwyane Wade looked a little off yesterday as he led the team in scoring with 21 points but he had 5 turnovers and only 3 assists.  Antoine Walker played 30 minutes off of the bench and he scored 20 points, grabbed 3 rebounds and dished out 3 assists.  Walker also shot well as he hit 4 of 7 from 3-point range.  Shaq fouled out after only 27 minutes but he was 9 of 14 from the floor and wound up with 19 points, 6 rebounds and 3 assists.  The Heat made a huge mistake when they quit getting Shaq the basketball because he was dominant while he was on the floor.  The Heat should run the offense through him with D-Wade not near 100%.  The Bulls lead the series 1-0.

The Miami Heat vs. The Chicago Bulls

Blogged under Big Heat News,Bloglockers,Injuries,The NBA Playoffs by alleyoop on Saturday 21 April 2007 at 2:17 pm
The Chicago Bulls and the Miami Heat had a great series in the playoffs last season, but now the Bulls have added Ben Wallace and Dwyane Wade comes into the series a little gimpy.  This should be a great series and here’s a closer look at how the matchups break down:

Point Guard:  Kirk Hinrich is the starting point guard for the Bulls and he’s more of a combo guard as he can score in bunches.  Jason “White Chocolate” Williams had an off year due to knee problems for the Heat.  Hinrich averaged 16.6 points, 3.4 rebounds and 6.3 assists per game this season.  He is really the #2 or #3 option on offense behind Ben Gordon and Luol Deng.  Hinrich is a good shooter that will help the Bulls stretch the Heat’s defense.  Jason Williams also is not a pure point guard as he averaged 10.9 points, 2.3 rebounds and 5.3 assists per game this season.  He also is a good shooter from the perimeter.  EDGE:  BULLS

Shooting Guard:  If Dwyane Wade wasn’t playing with an injured shoulder, this would be a huge edge for the Heat.  But, he’s gimpy with his bad shoulder and looks un-willing to take the basketball to the hole which takes away his best weapon as a basketball player.  He averaged 27.4 points, 4.7 rebounds and 7.5 assists per game this season, but his numbers have been way down since his return from a dislocated left shoulder.  Ben Gordon of the Bulls will give Wade fits on defense as he’s just a great offensive basketball player.  He can go long range with his shot or he has a good middle-range game just like Richard Hamilton does.  Gordon averaged 21.4 points, 3.1 rebounds and 3.6 assists per game.  He’s likely to have a huge series against the Heat.  EDGE:  SLIGHT BULLS

SMALL FORWARD:  The Bulls’ Luol Deng is a player on the rise.  He averaged 18.8 points, 7.1 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game this season.  He’s an excellent athlete who excels in the open court and he always hustles which leads to some easy baskets for him.  The Heat are going to start Eddie Jones at small forward because of his defense and long range shooting.  He averaged 7.7 points, 3.0 rebounds and 1.7 assists per game.  EDGE:  BULLS

POWER FORWARD:  Udonis Haslem is a player that brings his hard hat to the court and does the dirty work as he plays good defense and is a solid rebounder.  Haslem averaged 10.7 points, 8.3 rebounds and 1.2 assists per game.  Veteran P.J. Brown will start for the Bulls in this series.  He averaged 6.1 points, 4.8 rebounds and 0.7 assists per game.  Look for Brown to rebound well and give Dwyane Wade a few hard fouls in this series.  EDGE:  HEAT

CENTER:  Shaquille O’Neal knows that it’s now SHOWTIME.  Look for him to flip the switch and still show why he’s the best center in the NBA.  During the regular season O’Neal averaged 17.3 points, 7.4 rebounds and 2.0 assists per game.  Look for O’Neal to have better numbers than that in this series as he will throw his weight around in the key.  Ben Wallace won’t back down from Shaq in the paint.  He averaged 6.4 points, 10.7 rebounds and 2.4 assists per game this season.  Wallace is the ultimate hustle player and his energy rubs off on his teammates.   EDGE:  HEAT

BENCH:  The Miami Heat have a real deep bench and they will get to play a lot in this series.  Jason Kapono is the 3-point gunner on the Heat as he started about half of the season.  He averaged 10.9 points, 2.7 rebounds and 1.2 assists per game this season.  Antoine Walker is a player that the Heat will need to play well if they’re going to beat the Bulls.  He only averaged 8.5 points, 4.3 rebounds and 1.7 assists per game this season.  If motivated, he can still carry a team in short spurts on offense.  Alonzo Mourning is also a key in this series as he provides energy, defense and rebounding off of the bench.  He averaged 8.6 points, 4.5 rebounds and 0.2 assists per game this season.  James Posey was a key in the Heat’s championship run of last season.  Posey averaged 7.7 points, 5.0 rebounds and 1.3 assists per game last season.  The Heat will need his outside shooting off of the bench.  Gary Payton had an awful season but he’ll likely get some minutes in this series to give White Chocolate a break once in a while.  He only averaged 5.3 points, 1.9 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game this season.

The Bulls bench will also be important in this series.  Andres Nocioni is finally healthy and he’ll probably get starters minutes at power forward for the Bulls.  He brings incredible energy to the court and it rubs of on his teammates.  He averaged 14.1 points, 5.7 rebounds and 1.1 assists per game.  Chris Duhon will back up both Hinrich and Gordon as he can play either guard position.  He averaged 7.2 points, 2.2 rebounds and 4.0 assists per game this season.  Rookie Tyrus Thomas will cause problems for the Heat when he’s on the court because of his immense athletic ability.  He averaged 5.2 points, 3.7 rebounds and 0.6 assists per game.  Reserve guard Adrian Griffin could also play an important role as he’s a good defender who does the little things well on the court.  He only averaged 2.5 points, 2.0 rebounds and 1.1 assists per game this season.  EDGE:  HEAT

PREDICTION:  I like the Bulls to beat the Heat in 6 games because the Heat is a little to banged up, unmotivated and old to hang with the younger Bulls.

Chris Quinn has a tough rookie season for the Miami Heat

Blogged under Bloglockers,Injuries,Rookie Reports by alleyoop on Friday 20 April 2007 at 11:10 am

Quinn played in 42 games for the Miami Heat this season and he averaged 9.7 minutes, 3.4 points, 0.7 rebounds and 1.5 assists per game.  He only shot 36.6% from the floor and 35.1% from three-point range.  It will be interesting to see if the Heat move Quinn up on the depth chart to replace Gary Payton or if the Heat will sign a free-agent or draft a player to back up Jason Williams next season.

The 2006-2007 Miami Heat by the numbers

Blogged under Big Heat News,Bloglockers,Injuries by alleyoop on Thursday 19 April 2007 at 12:59 pm

The Miami Heat won the Southeast Division with a 44-38 record, 3 games ahead of the Washington Wizards.  The Heat were a solid 27-14 at home, but only 17-24 on the road.  The Heat were only 27-25 against the Eastern Conference and 9-7 against Division foes.  They averaged only 94.6 points per game and allowed 95.5 per game.  The Heat finished their season winning 5 of their last 10 games and won the Division because of the Wizards’ collapse due to major injuries.

The Miami Heat will likely just take it easy in the season finale

Blogged under Bloglockers,Injuries by alleyoop on Tuesday 17 April 2007 at 3:12 pm

The Miami Heat will likely limit Shaq and D-Wade’s minutes if he even lets them play at all.  It would be better if he just let the dynamic duo watch the last regular season game from the bench.  Look for guys like Dorell Wright, Michael Doleac, Eddie Jones and Chris Quinn to get a lot of playing time in the last game of the season.  The Heat are locked in as the #4 seed and they will play either the Chicago Bulls or the Cleveland Cavaliers in the first round of the playoffs, so they will need all of their players healthy as both the Bulls and Cavs are really good basketball teams.  Plus, the Heat will not have the home court advantage which will make things even tougher in the first round of the NBA playoffs.

Gary Payton to miss the remainder of the regular season

Blogged under Big Heat News,Bloglockers,Injuries by alleyoop on Saturday 14 April 2007 at 12:41 pm

Backup point guard Gary Payton will miss the remainder of the regular season with a torn left calf muscle.  Payton is hopeful that he will be able to return on April 21 or 22 for the beginning of the NBA Playoffs.  This year’s playoffs will likely be the swan song of Payton’s career as he has played in 67 games this season and averaged 5.3 points, 1.9 rebounds and 2.9 assists.  He also only shot 39.6% from the floor and his once great defensive skills are eroding.

Dwyane Wade has a valiant return to the Miami Heat

Blogged under Big Heat News,Bloglockers,Injuries,Steppin Up by alleyoop on Thursday 12 April 2007 at 1:54 pm

Dwyane Wade has returned from his dislocated left shoulder and he’s played in the last three games for the Heat.  They are trying to bring him along slowly as he’s only averaged 27.3 minutes per game.  In those games, Wade has averaged 14.0 points, 4.7 rebounds, 5.7 assists and 1.3 steals per game.  Wade is a hero in the Miami area already and this seems to be totally his own call in coming back, but, if he gets re-injured this was a really bad decision for the young man.  Playoff basketball is often very physical and you know whoever plays him in the first round is going to knock him down and crack him in his bad shoulder.  Unless the Miami Heat repeat as World Champs, D-Wade should have just took the time off to get healthy.

The Miami Heat need more from James Posey

Blogged under Bloglockers,Injuries,Need to step up by alleyoop on Thursday 12 April 2007 at 1:44 pm

James Posey has been pretty awful so far in April for the Heat.  He’s played in 7 games and he’s averaged 6.7 points, 6.4 rebounds and 1.7 assists per game.  Posey is only shooting 33.3% from the floor and he’s only hit 4 of 15 (26.7%) from three point range.  The Heat really will need Posey’s shooting to return if they are to make a deep run into the playoffs this season.
