2. (60) Robert Dozier, PF

23-year old Robert Dozier was the last player picked in the NBA Draft. The 23-year old Dozier is a banger who plays good on the defensive end of the court. He played in 148 games in four seasons at Memphis where he averaged 9.3 points, 6.5 rebounds, 1.0 assist and 1.5 blocked shots per game. Dozier will back up Udonis Haslem if he makes the roster.

UPDATE: Robert Dozier has signed with Greek team Colossus Rhodes. The Heat will keep his rights for a little while but it looks like he won’t be playing for them any time soon.

2. (42) Patrick Beverly, SG

The Heat acquired this pick from the Lakers and they didn’t think they could pass up Beverly. The 20-year old Beverly will have the cool job of backing up D-Wade. Beverly played two seasons at Arkansas covering 70 games in which he averaged 13.0 minutes, 5.5 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 1.5 steals per game. Beverly then played professionally last season in the Ukraine where he played in 46 games and averaged 16.7 points, 7.0 rebounds, 3.6 assists, 2.2 steals and 1.3 blocks per game. Beverly showed last season that he could handle the rigors of professional basketball so he will be on the fast track to getting playing time.

UPDATE: Beverly has signed a 1-year deal to play for Olympiakos of Greece meaning that both of the Heat’s draft picks will be playing overseas this season.

Chris Quinn comes back to the Miami Heat

Blogged under General, Bloglockers, Big Heat News, Front Page by alleyoop on Wednesday 24 June 2009 at 4:13 pm

25-year old reserve point guard Chris Quinn has exercised his player option worth $1.1 million bucks for the 2009-2010 NBA season. Quinn played in 66 games (0 starts) for the Heat last season and he averaged 14.6 minutes, 5.1 points, 1.1 rebounds and 2.0 assists per game. Quinn has now played 3 seasons for the Heat covering 168 games (26 starts) in which he has averaged 16.1 minutes, 5.6 points, 1.3 rebounds and 2.2 assists per game. Quinn is a good long range shooter and that’s where his value will lie for the Heat this upcoming season.

Dwayne Wade has his best season ever for the Miami Heat

The argument could be made that Dwyane Wade should have been MVP of the NBA over LeBron James. Wade took his game to a new level last season and a lot had to do with health. Wade played in a career high 79 games (all starts) for the Heat last season and he averaged 38.6 minutes, 30.2 points, 5.0 rebounds, 7.5 assists, 2.2 steals and 1.3 blocks per game. Wade was the NBA’s leading scorer and there’s no reason to think he will slow down as the 27-year old is extremely focused on the court right now. Wade has now played in 394 games (386 starts) in his NBA career and he has averaged 37.9 minutes, 25.2 points, 4.9 rebounds, 6.7 assists and 1.8 steals per game. Look for those career numbers to continue to rise for at least the next couple of seasons as long as D-Wade remains healthy.

Yakhouba Diawara is returning to the Miami Heat

Blogged under General, Bloglockers, Big Heat News, Front Page by alleyoop on Wednesday 10 June 2009 at 1:55 pm

26-year old SG/SF Yakhouba Diawara has exercised his player option for the 2009-2010 season at just a tad below $1 million bucks. The 6′7″, 230 pound Diawara played in 63 games (21 starts) in his first season with the Heat and he averaged 13.5 minutes, 3.4 points, 1.3 rebounds and 0.4 assists per game. The Heat will be better off if Diawara is nothing more than a bench player in 2009-2010. He thinks he is a good shooter but he’s not and the numbers back that up. Diawara has now played in 181 games (54 starts) in his 3-year NBA career and he has averaged 14.2 minutes, 3.6 points, 1.4 rebounds and 0.7 assists per game.
