Point Guards

Jason Williams played better than anyone could have expected last season, as he played under control and didn’t hoist up wild shots.  Williams averaged 12.3 points per game, 2.4 rebounds and 4.9 assists last season.  Williams also shot 44.2% from the field which is good for him.  Williams could stand to pump up his assist numbers this season as he has averaged 6.6 per game for his career, and he never had this much talent to pass to in Memphis.  Williams also has very quick hands and has averaged 1.3 steals per game over his career.

Gary “The Glove” Payton accepted the back-up role in Miami and ran with it.  Payton averaged 7.7 points, 2.9 rebounds and 3.2 assists per game last season.  Payton might get more minutes early in the season while Williams recovers from off-season knee surgery.  In 1267 career games, Payton has averaged 16.9 points, 4.1 rebounds, 6.9 assists and 1.9 steals per game.  Payton is a Hall of Fame player five years after he hangs up his playing shoes.

Dorell Wright is the third-stringer, but he won’t get much of a chance to play this season.  Riley likes letting the experienced guys play.

Dorell Wright hurting

G/F Dorell Wright is nursing a severely sprained ankle and could miss a few games.  This is not good timing for Wright, whose role was about to expand with the team.  Dwayne Wade calls Wright the best “athlete” on the Heat.

Jason Williams could miss the first week of the NBA season while recovering from knee surgery.  In his absence, look for “The Glove” Gary Payton to run the point until Williams is ready to return.

Pat Riley

Pat Riley took over for Stan Van Gundy after he stepped down, and led the team to an NBA Title!  Riley has compiled a 395-290 record in 9 seasons with the Heat.  In 22 seasons as a head coach in the NBA, Riley has a record of 1,151-589!  Riley’s main problem this year could be motivating his veteran team to play hard during the regular season.

Riley led the Heat to a 16-7 post-season record last year on their way to an NBA Title!  Riley sports a career playoff record of 171-107 in 20 appearances.
